When Market Fears Go Viral

How to transform 'tariff talks from chaos to calm

Welcome to The WealthWriter…let’s talk money!

This is the first “official” issue of the newsletter and this is the best way to describe how I’m feeling today.

There’s no better time to talk money than now…and here’s why:

Today I’m tackling tariffs for you.

(This content is for edutational purposes only and not financial advice. Please consult a qualified advisor before making investment decisions.)

Wealthy Word of the Week

Tariffs

Tariffs - Taxes imposed by one country on goods or services imported from another country

Wealthwriter Interpretation - If you want to make money in my territory you’ll have to pay me first.

Wealthwriter Tip - Use examples of everyday products affected by recent tariffs to make the concept tangible. This includes almost everything from food (avocados) to toiletries (deodorant) to toys (nearly 80%) for your children. Showing how tariffs directly impact your business or daily purchases creates immediate understanding.

When Tariffs Test Financial Nerves

'Liberation Day' came.

And markets dropped.

Now you might worry about your money or hear concerns from your team.

Makes sense. Tough market times show who gives good advice.

People are texting and emailing you with one main question:

"What are we doing about these tariffs?"

This isn't really about economic policy. It's normal fear wrapped in money talk.

As Carl Richards and Michael Kitces said on their podcast...

People don't call for data.

They call because they're scared.

What we all need is what Richards calls "first a hug, then a lecture."

Before looking at numbers, we need to feel heard.

Show empathy.

Then teach.

Then guide.

Smart money pros deal with the human side first—and you should too.

That's good money talk.

Notice how someone feels.

Give them clear facts they can use.

Connect this back to their money goals.

This is my A-R-T approach that works when discussing challenges with your team or making money choices:

  1. A- Acknowledge

    See and accept their worries

  2. R - Remind

Remind them why money matters to them

  3. Tackle -

Tackle the challenge, tariffs or other issues, with a clear vision forward

People will forget what you said about tariffs.

They'll remember how you made them feel when they were scared.

Mark My Words

I nerd out on health trends that help people live longer.

Turns out, Mass Mutual does too.

They've made a smart link: the longer people live, the longer they need money help.

This week I'm showing you their smart marketing about health and wealth:

What Makes This Good:

  1. The Health + Wealth Hook: Connecting two big life concerns grabs more attention than just talking about money.

  2. "Humans" Language: Using "humans" and "we" makes everyone feel included in the message.

  3. Simple Stats That Matter: They share clear numbers about life spans and health care that make you want to plan ahead.

  4. Visual Family Focus: The image shows real people, not charts or graphs, making money feel personal.

Steal These Ideas:

  • Connect your work to a bigger life trend people already care about

  • Use "we" language to make readers feel like part of a group

  • Back up your points with 1-2 simple stats that surprise people

  • Show real humans in your marketing images
